In 1951, Isamu Noguchi began designing the Akari Light Sculptures, characterized by weightless luminosity. For these objects he chose the name ‘akari’, which means ‘light’ in Japanese and evokes both illumination and physical lightness.
During a trip to Japan, Noguchi visited Gifu, a town known for its production of paper umbrellas and lanterns. While there, he painted his first two Akari Light Sculptures, and in the following years created a total of more than 100 models of table, floor and ceiling lamps ranging in size from 24 to 290 cm.

During a trip to Japan, Noguchi visited Gifu, a town known for its production of paper umbrellas and lanterns. While there, he painted his first two Akari Light Sculptures, and in the following years created a total of more than 100 models of table, floor and ceiling lamps ranging in size from 24 to 290 cm.
Each luminaire is meticulously handcrafted in the Ozeki workshop, a traditional family-run business based in Gifu. In the first step, bamboo sticks are stretched over the original wooden forms designed by Noguchi to form the frame that determines the shape of the object. Washi paper from the bark of the mulberry tree is cut into strips to fit the size and shape of the lamp and then glued to the bamboo strips. After the glue has dried, the wooden formwork is removed and the canopy can be folded. Akari Light Sculptures are packed for transportation or storage in flat boxes developed especially for luminaires.
