The most important designs in tubular steel, now considered classics of modern furniture design, emerged in just a few years. <\/h4>\n<p>During preparations for the Weissenhof exhibition in Stuttgart, Mart Stam developed a new type of chair, a tubular steel chair without back legs. To compensate for the possible instability of the cantilever frame, Stam reinforced the steel tubes at critical angles, creating a strong yet stable structure. It was Mies van der Rohe who first discovered the elasticity of tubular steel and used it as a structural principle.  <\/p>\n<p>Inspired by Stam&#8217;s idea, Stam designed the first flexible cantilever chair in design history in 1927. The model was produced with and without armrests under the names MR 20 and MR 10 respectively. The tubular steel furniture of the 1920s represents a rejection of the overloaded, traditional bourgeois interiors of the period, filled with huge furniture and decorative trinkets.
