The use of cold-expanding polyurethane makes traditional furniture construction methods redundant. Among the furniture designs of the “Studio 65” group, a series of sculptural furniture objects stand out for their radical use of the design freedom allowed by this new material.
And the style of this furniture shows characteristics that originated in the pictorial arts of the 1960s: Claes Oldenburg’s softening, the naïve stylization found in comics and commercial art, or the giant, drunken dimensions taken by 1960s objects.
In addition to an armchair in the shape of a Greek temple with columns and a Babylonian temple as a play system for children, Studio 65’s contribution to “radical design” included a sofa in the shape of a woman’s mouth. The subtitle given to Sofa Bocca by Studio 65: “lips, pseudonym Marylin” is a reference to the inspiration and symbolism of this design. Salvador Dalí, to whom this kind of design idea is attributed, is quoted by Studio 65 in this context as follows: Objects with a symbolic function leave no room for formal considerations. They are characterized only by each individual’s idea of love and are above any notion of form.
