Carl Hansen, founder of Carl Hansen & Søn, opened his first furniture workshop in Odense, Denmark in 1908. In its early days, the workshop worked on commission, producing large sets such as dining rooms and bedroom sets. When their work was appreciated for its high quality, the company began to grow, and over time they began to produce individual pieces from the sets. The combination of handicraft and mass production is what sets the company apart.
