In the second half of the 19th century, bentwood companies began producing rocking chairs that corresponded to the bourgeoisie’s need for an appropriate level of comfort as a symbol of fun and relaxation.
Around 1882, the firm Jacob & Josef Kohn launched a model that differed markedly from earlier rocking chairs. The double loop, clearly prominent on the front of the frame, combines the supporting functions on both sides. Prototypes such as the Thonet rocking chair replace the back leg-like supports with a smaller wooden ring at the back, giving the structure of the chair a graceful and weightless appearance. Founded in 1867, the company initially mainly copied Thonet furniture. Innovative sketches such as Rocking Chair No. 9 helped the business develop its own unique style.
