Harry Bertoia, who hails from Italy, initially devoted himself to sculpture. Using techniques familiar from goldwork and sculpting with iron wire, he created a series of chairs and armchairs. Until 1953, he developed these ideas together with specialists at Knoll until they were ready for mass production.
The structure of the Diamond Chair clearly separates the different functions of the chair; the transparent wire shell bends from a squared lattice into an organically shaped diamond, like a net frozen in space, and the round iron base makes it a polished diamond.
Bertoia thinks that his furniture is similar to his sculptures: “In chairs, first of all, many functional problems have to be solved, but basically chairs are also studies of space, form and metal.” A closer look reveals that they are mostly composed of air. Space flows through them.
