The Johnson Wax Chair is characterized by rounded forms that also echo the lines of a famous building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, namely the S.C. Johnson & Son Company Administration Building in Racine, Wisconsin.
When it opened in 1939, the company building caused a real sensation. Lighting is exclusively through surface lighting, and pictures of offices featuring a “forest” of round columns, complete with leaves and buds, are seen all over the world. Wright believed that the furniture, the rooms and even the building itself was an abstracted organic continuation of the surrounding landscape or cityscape.
