In 1955, when Alvar Aalto became the dominant figure in Helsinki’s cultural life, Ilmari Tapiovaara introduced himself as the first Finnish non-architect designer. Specializing in chairs and furniture, Tapiovaara created the only and unique home lamp: Maija. The Maija collection reflects the feeling of light in Baltic cities, where the streets are barely lit, except for the light that seeps in through the windows of houses and shops: from the inside out. Inspired by this, Tapiovaara created a honeycomb structure of stacked metal disks that filter the happy interior light. The Maija bee was a very popular cartoon character in those years. It is offered by Santa Cole in its original pale pink or white version.
