”No. 14” The chair is one of the world’s most successful mass-produced products. It is a standard model in Thonet’s collection of bent wood furniture and is considered a typical Viennese café chair.
By 1930, 50 million of these chairs had been sold. A modified version of the “No. 14” is still produced by Thonet today. Stuhl No. 14 Chair, which has become a design classic, is also in the Vitra Design Museum collection.
Using the bent wood technique developed by Michael Thonet, solid wood is subjected to steam pressure and shaped three-dimensionally in iron molds, offering great scope for creativity in design. Thonet’18. The new packaging system, which was revolutionary for the second half of the century, was also developed during this period. The individual parts of the chairs are packed in an extremely space-saving way and then shipped to their final location, where they are screwed together for the first time. By combining industrial production processes and a business-oriented approach with unique aesthetics, the Thonet brothers have made a significant contribution to the current concept of industrial design.
