Dutch designer Mart Stam produced the first prototypes for a cantilever chair in 1926, for which he cut gas pipes and combined them with elbow sections.
The base frame, legs, seat and backrest were formed by a continuous loop bent at right angles. In 1927, Stam had his design produced by the L. & C. Arnold company and was also featured in their sales program for a year.
Today in the Vitra Design Museum collection, this chair has become a design classic since its production in 1926.
