The Tom Vac Chair was first realized as part of a sculpture called “Totem”, which consists of 70 stackable chairs.
Commissioned by Domus magazine, this sculpture was installed in the center of Milan during the Salone del Mobile event in 1997. The seat shell with its characteristic wave profile is based on earlier versions designed by Ron Arad for the dining room of a house in Tel Aviv. The first “Totem” series was created in just four months. Although a complex metal to produce, vacuum-formed aluminum proved to be a suitable material.
The design of the Tom Vac Chair makes minimal deviations from its original plan, while the flexible seat shell of polypropylene offers a high level of comfort.
