Eames Elephant Stool

In 1945, Charles and Ray Eames designed the legendary Plywood Elephant. Only two prototypes of this complex design were built. A prototype was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946 and still exists today in the Eames family archives.

In 2007, Vitra celebrated the 100th anniversary of Charles Eames. released a limited edition Plywood Elephant to celebrate his birthday. The response was so great that the design soon went into mass production.

In 1950, Charles and Ray Eames were the first designers to use plastic, a material still unknown to the furniture industry at the time, to cheaply produce seat covers for their designs. Like today’s plastic seat covers of the Eames Plastic Chairs, the Eames Elephant is made of robust polypropylene.
