In 1955, with the support of the Union des Artistes Modernes, a group of French designers, Prouvé participated in a competition for the furnishing of a student dormitory in Antony, near Paris.
In collaboration with Charlotte Perriand, he produced a sample furniture line for the leisure area, cafeterias and a series of rooms in the student dormitory. Prouvé designed a similar version for the University of Strasbourg as early as 1950, and the chair shown here was also part of his series.
