This new publication is dedicated to R.F.’s Baranger Moving Indicators. The collection is housed at the Vitra Design Museum. Moving Displays are designed to be eye-catching new moving objects used in jewelry store windows to attract customers, especially in the US.
The Baranger Motion Displays R.F. Collection was produced by Baranger Studios in Pasadena, CA between 1937 and 1957 and has been loaned to thousands of jewelry stores over the years. First, in the 1990s, Rolf Fehlbaum, Honorary President of Vitra and founder of the Vitra Design Museum, worked in Weil am Rhein to create a carefully selected comprehensive collection of these objects.
With large-scale illustrations of the different Moving Screens and an atmospheric photo essay featuring black-and-white details of the objects, the book offers an unprecedented and in-depth look at this collection. In the attached article, Bill Shaffer traces the success story of the exhibitions and sheds light on the importance of the red safes delivered to the jewelers.
Along with Robots 1:1 and Space Fantasys 1:1, Baranger Motion Displays is the third publication focusing on R.F. Gathering. Visitors can see the Moving Displays collection at the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein as part of the “Wunderkammer” (cabinet of curiosities), which also presents other parts of Rolf Fehlbaum’s extensive collection. So that readers can experience the wonders of these moving objects for themselves, each Moving Screen in the book is given a QR Code that links to a fun video clip of the screen in action.
