The Organic chair was an entry for the 1940 design competition “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” at MoMA.
Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen, working together for the first time that year, won the first prize with this design. A condition for competition entries was that the object must be suitable for industrial production.
In 1941, Eames developed a method for three-dimensional shaping of the award-winning chair. The 3D seat is covered in foam rubber and upholstered in fabric, made possible by creating cuts in the veneer and cutting pieces out of it. However, due to the war economy and initially high production costs, the prototypes did not go into mass production, despite the original competition specifications. Available from the 1950s, the chair is today a Mid – Century design classic.
