The Tulip chair is one of a series of chairs, stools and tables developed by Eero Saarinen over a period of five years. The characteristic feature of the series is that the support structure is likened to a central support pillar, like a wine glass, to emphasize the uniformity of the table and chair.
Eero Saarinen describes the Tulip chair as follows: “In a typical furniture arrangement, the bases of tables and chairs create an ugly, confusing and restless world. Again I wanted to design a chair as an integrated piece. From King Tut’s chair to Thomas Chippendale’s chair, all important furniture of the past always had a holistic structure. Today, we part ways with this integrity with our choice of plastic and laminated wood shell. I look forward to the point where the plastics industry will be able to produce the chair as I have designed it, using a single material.
