The Volkshaus furniture series consists of a solid oak lounge chair and stool with seat and backrest made of durable cord, as well as a matching side table. The complex structure of the frames, made of intersecting X-shaped square wood, gives the furniture its architectural expression.
Due to their asymmetry, the pieces look different from every angle. The main design feature of the series is the point where the wooden legs intersect and interlock: This wooden connection looks simple, but is actually quite complex. It was developed by Herzog & de Meuron during an extensive research process. Inspired by the traditional wooden connections in Japanese architecture, this ingenious construction principle gives the furniture its sculptural character. The Volkshaus series is perfect for personal interiors or prestigious waiting areas, in lobbies or hotel rooms, wherever comfortable seating is desired.
The Lounge Chair, Stool and Side Table can be found, for example, in the boutique hotel Volkshaus Basel, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and named after the collection.
