Designed by Franco Albini in 1951, the Gala is an instant classic of Italian design. The curvature of the calamus elements is designed to provide elastic support to the body, following the forms. The lightweight, self-supporting structure is an exemplary tribute to the popular tradition of craftsmanship, the canestrai (basket weavers).
Using the refined engineering device of the tensile structure to revive the original principle, Albini created an aerial seat that does not rely on the concept of a structure to be covered, but instead makes the covering itself a structural system. The Malacca structure is hand fire bent. It is hand woven with Indian Rattan Cane, previously softened in water and hand folded. Bindings in flat oval Rattan Leather. Can be reclined. Available in all low finishes.
