Poul Henningsen designed the triple shadow system in 1925-1926. The first lights using the system were designed by PH in collaboration with Louis Poulsen for an exhibition in Paris. PH designed not just a light, but a whole system, and over the years around a thousand different models were produced. PH was the first to take a scientific approach to light, based on the logarithmic spiral. By using a design based on the logarithmic spiral, he achieved an even distribution of light along the entire curve of the shadow. This even distribution of light, together with the diffuse reflection from the glass, made it possible to control glare and shadow. PH light model numbers refer to the shade size. The PH 3½-2½ Floor Lamp consists of an upper shade of approximately 35 cm with lower shades. The lighting was introduced in its current form in 2002.
