Gae Aulenti’s most famous poolside collection of outdoor furniture from the 1960s, ‘Locus Solus’, has been reproduced by the Italian company Exteta. Bringing the collection back for the first time since its original launch, Exteta celebrates the late Italian designer and his passion for shape and color.
Designed in 1964 for Centro Studi Poltronova, the collection included chaise lounges, tables and chairs in dark tones and matching prints and was produced as part of the set of the 1969 film La Piscine, starring Alain Delon, Romy Schneider and Jane Birkin.
Movie star status aside, the collection was one of Aulenti’s most entertaining design moments, reflecting the architectural work he contributed to the city of Milan with the colorful Piazza Cadorna structures.
The collection of symmetrical pieces of furniture with printed cushions echoes traditional curved wooden furniture shapes and one of the designer’s own pieces, the rocking chair he made for Poltronova a few years ago.
An important moment for Italian design, the collection signaled the transition to the outdoors with a collection that combined functional aspects with a pop attitude. Returning as a faithful reproduction, painstakingly recreated in collaboration with Archivio Aulenti, ‘Locus Solus’ proves the contemporary relevance of the designer’s legacy.
