The name of this collection comes from pearls, in particular from a Japanese woman pearl diver named Ama. In Japanese, the word ama means ‘woman of the sea’, a female pearl diver who traditionally collected pearls in Japan for centuries. The assembly is available in two pre-configurable build variations that determine whether the shell opens or not, evoking real-life pearl mussels. The meticulously cut oversized glass covers a pearl in the center in the form of a light source that provides soft ambient light.
Each glass shell is produced using a special glass-making technique. For two days the glass is heated and gradually melts under its own weight into a prepared conical mold. But the lighting has both open and closed versions that work beautifully as individual pieces or in natural groups in clusters of mussels.
