Fiberglass material chairs are rare examples of the successful synthesis of formal and technical innovation.
For the first time in design history, Charles and Ray Eames used the malleability of plastic to develop a comfortable seating shell that conforms to the shape of the human body. The idea of making a three-dimensional molded shell is based on a design dating back to 1940.
The shaping process of the shell, originally done using plywood, failed due to the extreme conditions required to shape the material. However, with the advent of fiberglass technology, it was possible to achieve satisfactory results. The first Fiberglass Chair went into production in 1950. After years of experimentation, Charles and Ray Eames were able to achieve their goal of an economical, robust and comfortable industrial chair. But fiberglass was controversial for ecological reasons: However, thanks to recent advances in technology and materials, DSW can today be produced in the same way, but in polypropylene.
