Torres Clavé was a founding member of GATCPAC, the Catalan Group of Architects and Technicians for the Advancement of Contemporary Architecture, in line with European avant-garde currents, especially rationalism. Together with his friends Josep Lluís Sert and Joan Baptista Subirana, the revolutionary architect designed the GATCPAC lamp as a gift for the buildings they constructed. Santa Cole remodeled the lamp according to Torres Clavé’s plans; it is thought to be the first and original lamp of the many variations produced by the group. The GATCPAC floor lamp is raised on an adjustable, polished aluminum base that can be directed upwards for indirect light or tilted to emit a more direct light. It is like a spotlight that adapts to the needs of the user.
