Lilum’50 Limited Edition Sofa

To celebrate the first fifty years of its history, Maxalto has invited Dutch artist Patrick van Riemsdijk to add his calligraphic touch to dormeuse Lilum in a limited edition of fifty pieces. Numbered and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, they will be upholstered in a special fabric that reproduces the artist’s distinctive trademark style.

The play of reference between the artist’s conceptual universes and the brand also involves dexterity, and it is therefore no coincidence that the choice fell on a painter. Just as Van Riemsdijk’s paintings are the result of his skill with a brush, the Maxalto pieces are the result of the skill of those who use and pass on the ancient knowledge of upholstery and cabinet making. They are crafts, not art, but their inherent artistry means that they participate in the eternal dialog between form and function.

Lilum 50 is a precious limited edition of only fifty pieces, presented to celebrate Maxalto’s 50th anniversary. The upholstery fabric chosen is a fine linen used exclusively for this collection and transformed into an artist’s canvas for Dutch painter Patrick van Riemsdijk thanks to reproduction technology fine-tuned by the company’s R&D center. Van Riemsdijk’s harsh yet elegant brushstrokes create a sophisticated contrast with Lilum’s rounded shapes, while at the same time harmonizing with its completely simple form. The result is another example of the successful synthesis of languages and styles that has always distinguished Made in Maxalto. Each piece in the Lilum 50 collection comes with a certificate guaranteeing its authenticity and uniqueness, signed by Antonio Citterio with the corresponding limited edition number.
