Inspired by Pop Art and Pop Culture, 1960 furniture design broke away from the purity of modern functionalism. The use of new materials freed furniture from the constraints of traditional structures and made it possible for designers to play creatively with form and color.
At international furniture fairs, designers such as Verner Panton presented futuristic-looking interior landscapes suitable for a free and easy, hedonistic lifestyle. Verner Panton wrote about his work: “I try to forget existing examples, even if they are well made, and find my own way of compromising with materials.” “The result rarely has four legs, not because I don’t want to make chairs, but because working with new materials like wire mesh and polyester requires new forms.
The Panton Chair is today recognized as one of the classics of modern furniture design. It was the first chair in the history of design to have no back legs and to be molded entirely from plastic in one piece. It took about 12 years of development work to put the idea into practice.
