Poul Henningsen designed the tricolor system in 1925-1926. The first lights using the system were designed by PH in collaboration with Louis Poulsen for an exhibition in Paris. PH did not just design a light, he designed a whole system; about a thousand different models have been produced over the years. This wide selection consists of table, floor and wall lamps, as well as a range of different chandeliers, which were very popular in the 30s for lighting private homes from high ceilings.
The luminaire is designed on the principle of a reflective three-shade system that directs the majority of light downwards. The shades are made of mouth-blown opal three-layer glass, with a glossy top and a sandblasted matt underside, providing a soft and even light distribution.
