Acrilica Table Lamp
Joe Colombo’s first project for Oluce was the only one he worked on with his brother Gianni. Created in 1962, it was immediately nicknamed “Acrilica” for its astonishingly striking and unusual novelty of its pronounced curve made of acrylic.
Methacrylate, which has been used in the field of lighting for nearly a decade, usually in the form of thin sheets that are cut or thermoformed, found a very special use here: Its thickness and curve, thanks to its conductive properties, allowed the light from a fluorescent lamp in a painted steel base to pass through the transparent body and finally illuminate the head in an incredible way. Thanks to this “magical movement”, it is a work of kinetic art rather than a lamp.
