Melides Outdoor Planter

Rising from the melancholy marshes and gently undulating dunes of the Wadden Sea National Park, a 500-kilometer-long Danish coastal area created by the ice age 12,000 years ago, it is a structure so intertwined with the landscape that it is difficult to imagine one without the other.

A gateway for visitors wishing to explore the Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Wadden Sea Center is a prime example of Danish architect Dorte Mandrup’s ability to ground her work in the local environment and natural landscapes while adding a deeply artistic, forward-looking element. Built using local building traditions, the asymmetrical thatched roofs and facades draw on the layout of traditional four-wing farmhouses and use locally sourced construction materials. The line that forms the apex of the roof runs in perfect parallelism with the endless horizon of the North Sea.

Using materiality and form to tell a story, convey an emotion and raise awareness, as Mandrup has so cleverly done through the Wadden Sea Centre, is a practice that Domani artists have been practicing in their work for nearly 30 years. This continues to be at the heart of what we stand for.
