Cubic form, simple design, elegant proportions and flexible structure

The development of the perfected console chairs S 33 and S 34, one of the first of their kind, today combines both the spirit of the period and a sense of tradition. After seeing the first cantilever chairs in furniture history in 1927, artist Kurt Schwitters wrote: “If two legs are enough, why four?”

The S 33 and S 34 models were a big hit at the Werkbund exhibition at the Weissenhof in Stuttgart. From 1925, Mart Stam began experimenting with small-diameter gas pipes, initially connecting them with standard fittings used by plumbers. He then developed the cantilever chair, which no longer stands on four legs. This principle of construction, with its formal simplicity, marked an important turning point in the history of modern furniture design.

Stam’s S 33 and S 34 were not just functional interior objects; they were also part of a radically changed perspective on architecture and life.
