Description
Console with a single line – tubular steel seat S 35
Among all the cantilevered armchairs of the Bauhaus era, the S 35, with its lightness, flexibility and comfort, casts a shadow over all that is heavy and immobile. In 1930, the modern lifestyle conveyed by the S 35 seemed visionary; today, it is part of our mobile and individual lifestyle.
With the S 35, Marcel Breuer has succeeded in combining all the functions of the cantilevered tubular steel seat in a single line, including the armrests. Breuer achieved a double cantilevered effect with his design: the seat and armrests flex independently of each other. The flexing motion of the cantilevered seat and backrest frame towards the rear is balanced by the flexing armrests. For extra comfort, there is also a matching footrest – also designed as a cantilevered piece of furniture.
The comfortable club chair S 35 was first presented at the famous Deutscher Werkbund exhibition at the “Salon des Artistes Décorateurs” in Paris in 1930 as part of the furnishing of a prototype skyscraper apartment that Breuer realized together with Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer.
