The famous Japanese architect was inspired by the technique of preserving construction timber by charring its surface, known in Japan as Shou-Sugi-Ban or Yakisugi.
This ancient technique uses charred wood as a tool to preserve it without the need for painting or sealing. It is an aspect of this technique that has led to its revival in eco-friendly architecture today. Adapting this process to the centuries-old technique of glassworking allowed for a contemporary design that is unique for each piece of hand-blown glass.
