Looking out from under the impressive columns at the northern end of Piazza San Marco in Venice is the 1958 Olivetti Showroom. A masterpiece of 20th-century architecture, this exhibition was commissioned to showcase the Italian technology manufacturer’s cutting-edge products, but most importantly to demonstrate the extraordinary talent of Italian architect Carlo Scarpa.
Venice-born Scarpa’s attention to detail, appreciation of craft and instinctive approach to materials is almost unmatched in contemporary architecture. One of the main features of the exhibition hall is the central staircase, created using cantilevered offset marble slabs that seem to hover in mid-air. The hand-cut square glass mosaic on the floor of the exhibition hall was an homage to Murano, where Scarpa had previously been director of the Venini glass factory.
Scarpa has always enjoyed working closely with craftspeople and took great pleasure in the two-way design process. His architecture, an elegant yet striking combination of modernism, historicism and craftsmanship, remains as relevant today as it ever was.
