While the traditional abat-jour uses the shadow to contain the light source within, in this family of lamps the shadow is paradoxically and thought-provokingly empty, with the light produced by the light. The lower disk directs the light output downwards, while the upper disk illuminates the glass cover with a soft, diffused light.
