For Thonet, Marcel Breuer’s tubular steel table S 285 is a successful example of the programmatic Bauhaus ambition to combine art and technology into a new entity.
Breuer was a trained carpenter and combined his knowledge of using tubular steel as a material with his experience in interior design. The table top and storage elements made of varnished or painted wood fit harmoniously into the tubular steel frame. The supporting frame consists of a curved line and the wooden elements, characterized by clear forms, seem to float within it.
With its formally balanced proportions, this piece of furniture represents an important piece of contemporary history known as the “New Objectivity”. Thonet produces several versions of this striking model.
